NED KELLY: FACT AND FICTION.
KYNETON MUSEUM PIPER ST. (museum@macedon-ranges.vic.gov.au)
The brochure:
Many mysteries surround iconic Australian bushranger Ned Kelly.
Who was he? How did he become an outlaw? What made the man into the myth?
A travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia with a Kyneton
connection.
Recently I visited this
fine exhibition in Kyneton.
I have visited the museum many times as I have a life membership. (no longer
available for purchase)
The museum is an old bank with a residence upstairs and has always been well worth
the visit.
Since my last visit the upstairs rooms have been opened up and low glass walls
keep visitors from touching the exhibits.
Outside there are many buildings and items of great interest to those who love
our history.
According to the council website:
The Kyneton Museum is located at 67 Piper Street, Kyneton,
conveniently located less than
an hour north of Melbourne along the Calder Freeway.
The Museum Collection is housed in a beautiful bluestone building recognised by
the National Trust.
The building was built in 1856 as a Bank of New South Wales, to meet the banking
needs of a fast
changing population on its way to the central Victorian Goldfields.
The original banking chamber has changing exhibitions and the upstairs bank
manager's residence
and outdoor exhibits including original bluestone stables, servant's kitchen,
laundry and Theaden
Cottage, have a fascinating display. A wide variety of carriages and historical
agricultural equipment
is also displayed.
The combination of the
'Ned' banners and items from the Victorian Police Museum along with local
Kyneton artefacts gelled very well. It is great to see Kyneton promoting its
link with Ned Kelly.
There were many visitors to the exhibit despite the freezing cold weather
outside. For the kids interest there
was a series of little Ned helmets to find.

A FEW OF THE BANNERS CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY; ON LOAN FROM THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF
AUSTRALIA.
