Avenel is a beaut little town very much connected to the 'Kelly Story'.

Ned's family lived here after Beveridge and it was here that Ned saved the young boy
Richard Shelton from the local fast flowing creek.

For his bravery Ned was awarded a silk sash with gold trim. He wore the sash at the siege
at Glenrowan, it is now housed at the Benalla museum.

Unfortunately John (Red) Kelly died in this town and is buried here.
