There are two new faces at the Benalla Costume and Pioneer Museum, with
the pastel portraits of two well-known Benalla identities hanging from
the museum walls.
Ned Kelly and Weary Dunlop's pastel portraits have both been
characteristically and accurately captured by Baddaginnie artist Jenny
Paull.
While putting together artwork for her upcoming exhibition, Facets and
Faces - which will be on display at Benalla Art Gallery next month and
features images of Benalla and its people - Ms Paull said she thought it
would be fun to do a couple of pastel sketches of Weary Dunlop and Ned
Kelly.
"Both are local identities with strong connections to Benalla, but total
opposites in personality and their place in history," she said.
"Obviously I was not able to paint from life as I prefer to do, and had
to rely on other source material."
Ms Paull said she wanted to donate the two paintings to the Benalla
Costume and Pioneer Museum because she thought it would be an
appropriate place for them to sit, among other related memorabilia.
Benalla Costume and Pioneer Museum exhibitions committee chair Norma
Grubb welcomed the generous donation, saying the pastel works were very
impressive and, on behalf of the museum, said they were delighted to
accept them.
"We're very lucky to have Jenny in the district," she said.
Ms Paull also thanked Andrea Cathcart from AriArt Framing who donated
the frames for the two artworks.
Jennifer Paull's exhibition Facets and Faces will be on display at
Benalla Art Gallery from June 4 to July 5 and will feature pastel works
of aspects of Benalla, and oil portraits of some local identities.
The official opening of the exhibition will take place on Sunday, June 6
at 2.30 pm.
