MELBOURNE CLUB

Home

The Melbourne Club was ‘the’ place for the rich and influential to meet in Melbourne Victoria.

According to Ann Galbally, “it was the unofficial power center of Melbourne”. Big squatters mingling with Police and Judges.

One high ranking police member was Captain Standish. Captain Standish was a ‘dandy’ who arrived in Australia under a false name, (to escape gambling debts). Standish was known as a procurer of women at the club for his mates and in the film 'Outlawed' was seen at the club frolicking with scantily dressed women.

The Melbourne Club (built in 1858) still exists and can be seen at 36-50 Collins St Melbourne Victoria.
