The inland Victorian towns have been garrisoned by artillerymen for
protection against attacks from the Kelly gang of bushrangers and all
the engine-drivers, stokers, and guards on the railways have been armed
with rifles and revolvers. The bushrangers threatened to remove the
rails on the lines unless they are pardoned or allowed to leave the
colony. Great excitement prevails.
