After Ned Kelly was
sentenced to death by Judge Barry, Ned Kelly's friends
and family, along with David Gaunson (the parliamentarian) organised a
petition
for reprieve, they did there best to obtain as many signatures as
possible to try
and have Ned's life spared from the hangman's noose.Petitions were
nothing new, they were used to help gain compo for Ann Jones,
to try and stop Constable Fitzpatrick from being booted out of the
police force
in Lancefield, to get Mr. Ryan out of gaol after being arrested under
the Felon's
Apprehension Act and several others associated with the Kelly story.
Numbers of signatures vary from 30,000 to 50,000.
Using the internet I searched the online documents and only managed to
find 6,418.
The documents themselves are fascinating reading, the towns where
they gathered
signatures, the places they went (including pubs) and much more.
Listed below are places and people I have selected amongst the many

"Next morning the press recorded: "The petition altogether is one to
which no importance whatever can be attached. Many of the signatures
appear to have been written by children or illiterate persons."
