STAY

Home

This is how the Imperial Hotel looked before demolition in the 1960's.

There are many many places to stay at Beechworth.
If you wish to stay in the heart of town (and in style) there is a great place
which sits right on top of the site of the Imperial Hotel where Ned fought
'Wild' Wright in the now famous boxing match.

Wright House                                                                                    Kelly House (Photo D.White)

In fact this is not just one place but three! Operated by John & Lisa Furlong are the following properties:

Pickett Cottage, this yet to be renovated accommodation sits close to the street front.

Wright House,  is named after Wild Wright who had the 20 round bare knuckle fight with Ned Kelly.

Kelly House, named after Ned Kelly himself.

(also John & Lisa have Beeches on High)

Both Wright and Kelly Houses were named after the fight held on this site.
This historic twenty round bare fisted fight between Ned Kelly and Wild Wright was fought because Ned
wanted to even a score with Wright after Wright had loaned him what turned out to be a stolen horse.
Ned got three years for using the horse and Wild 18 months for actually stealing it. The fight took place
on this property at the rear of the Imperial Hotel.

REVIEW OF OUR STAY AT 'WRIGHT HOUSE' BEECHWORTH.

On the nights of Friday 19th & Saturday 20th of September my family
and I were fortunate enough to stay at 'Wright House' part of the
'Luxury Accommodations' of owners John & Lisa Furlong.
I started promoting the three facilities, 'Beeches on High', 'Kelly
House' & 'Wright House' after visiting the site of the Imperial Hotel
many months ago.
There is a lot of history to the site as it was the location of a
boxing match between Isaiah 'Wild' Wright and Edward 'Ned' Kelly in
1874. The Imperial Hotel is, however, long gone, with only the
original poplars still standing tall out the back as a reminder of
what once was.
A beautiful old house had been removed to this location from Berwick
in Victoria. The slope of the block allowed another (19th century
style) house to be constructed below. It was built using original
materials and it is almost impossible to believe it was not always
here. It is this accommodation below, known as 'Wright House' named
after Wild Wright that we were fortunate enough to stay in.
I have a mate who kindly puts me up when I am in Beechworth, however
on this occasion I jumped at the chance of staying in a house situated
right on the site of the Imperial Hotel. Hard to believe that here I
was staying right where Ned and Wright fought it out. A photo taken
before this fight is the only known full length photo of Ned taken
outside of prison.

If you are someone who wishes to stay in clean, comfortable, and
well-appointed accommodation right
in the heart of Beechworth this is the place for you.
A knowledge of (or interest in) Ned Kelly is not a prerequisite, of
course, those wishing to explore Beechworth and surrounds will find
this a terrific base.
'Wright House' is so close to everything Beechworth has to offer that
there is no need for a car. Your accommodation is but a few doors from
Camp Street and around the corner from Ford Street as well.
The accommodations of 'Wright House' are superb. The décor is perfectly
set out befitting  the era it represents. With 'Wright House' it is
the attention to detail which sets it apart. The entire house is 'old
world', from the original old butchers chopping block to the beautiful
original dining table complete with 1870's church pews. The Baltic
floor boards, the dado, the leadlight windows are all made from
original materials creating an atmosphere of yesterday. Even the beds
are the original cast iron variety, offering style and comfort.

No detail has been overlooked.

First impressions are important here and we were not disappointed. We
arrived to find a warm 'Coonara' fire burning and the smell of fresh
flowers all about the room. As we entered through the old styled front
door with its large handles we stepped back in time and soaked in the
atmosphere. The people behind this house obviously knew what they were
doing.
Many of us suffer back problems and I was over the moon to wake up
with not a twinge. The mattress was superb and the doona more than was
sufficient but I also made use of a blanket and found it to be so
thick that there was no need for anything else.
The site is so quiet that I slept the entire night without hearing a
peep. I half expected some noise from the local pubs, but heard
nothing.
The shower pressure was fine and the heat as expected. The kids used
the spa in our bathroom and reported that to be a real treat. There
was a second bathroom and the toilet was separate from our bathroom,
too.
Tea and coffee along with sugar etc is provided as was plenty of milk.
In fact everything you need is here, crockery & cutlery, cooking
utensils, washing machine and dryer along with iron and more.
We also had the opportunity to walk through 'Kelly House' and it
appears to be just as comfortable, with ensuites to all bedrooms. It
offers a similar, yet, different ambience, that of an original
colonial home with a luxury touch.
I feel that staying here has really spoilt my family and it would be a
step back to stay anywhere else.
I tried hard to find fault with this place, I wanted to give John &
Lisa an honest opinion, but  I could find no fault at all!
According to the guest surveys sent out by the Furlongs, everyone who
has stayed here has rated it 5 out of 5, and we are in total
agreement!
In conclusion, I would have to say that if you are after a stay in the
middle of Beechworth in an historical location in fine luxury then you
will love your time here at 'Wright House'.
