 "Put
up your hands and come this way or I will shoot you like bloody dogs" so
said Sgt Steele at Glenrowan.
Steele claimed a lot of the credit for bringing Ned down with shots to
his legs.
Other police present at Glenrowan, such as Phillips, claimed later that
Steele
was not as deserving as he made out. That he was one of many who finally
brought Ned down and that Ned actually tripped.
Certainly Steele was foolhardy in his firing, he did his best to
shoot Ann Jones
and even boasted of it.

He wounded innocent civilians caught up in the battle and
tried to finish off Ned once captured and lying wounded.
Steele was awarded a silver sword by the Stock Protection Association
for
his efforts in stopping stock theft.
The Royal Commission was not impressed with Steele.
Sergeant Steele arrived in Glenrowan around 5.10 AM.
Among the men who arrived with him included the with the following
men.
2679 Mounted Constable J. Montiford
2719 " " " " William Moore
2886 " " " " Patrick Healey
3039 " " " " Dixon
